I think most of us had experienced self-doubt, and it can be an incredibly challenging thing to overcome. Self-doubt sometimes can be impostor syndrome, where you don’t have enough confidence to believe in yourself that you can do this, whatever that goal can be. But did you know that we can help ourselves? So first, let’s explore what self-doubt is, and how it impacts our lives.

Self-doubt is a lack of confidence in one’s abilities in making decisions, and it can lead to negative thoughts and feelings such as fear, anxiety, and insecurity. It sucks feeling that way! I felt that way many many times. Even today, I experience self-doubt. Sometimes I question myself if I’m qualified enough, if I can do these goals.  There are times when I ask myself why am I doing this?

Those are all symptoms of self-doubt, or sometimes like they say, impostor syndrome. So doing some soul searching and some researching in how can we overcome our self-doubt, I found some strategies to share that may help build resilience and some confidence in all of us.

I came up with five, and the first one is to identify your triggers. Think about what situations or triggers that you get. What brought on the self-doubt? Write it down, use a journal, and start really questioning yourself deep down inside. What is triggering the self-doubt and impostor syndrome? Sometimes when you write it down, it helps. You might even cry. You should also feel the feelings that comes to you, whether it’s anger, fear, anxiety, really get inside your head, sit down, and feel it.

And then write it down, put it in a journal. Sometimes when you write things out, it makes you feel better. I mean, have you ever had such anger towards your spouse or your boyfriend or your girlfriend or partner, and you just really wanna scream at them? But they left, they’re out of the house, and you’re still angry. So sometimes it helps when you take a notebook and you start writing down everything you wanna say, all the swear words included. Everything, as if that person was right in front of you. And you know what?

After you write it down, you feel better! It’s worked for me, it’s worked for a lot of people I guided to do that. So write it down, all your fears and anxiety about self-doubt and impostor syndrome.

Okay, the second one is to challenge your negative thoughts. When do you have a negative thought? Do you have a negative thought about yourself? Well challenge it with the evidence that supports a more positive view. Turn it around! So for example, when you think you’re not good enough, remind yourself of your accomplishments and strengths.

I’m sure, throughout the many years that you’ve been alive and on Earth that you’ve done things that you have overcome and taught yourself how to do things, figured it out. Those are accomplishments, no matter how big or how small. Write down your strengths.

Okay, the third thing. Don’t try to tackle everything all at once. Instead, take small steps, baby steps towards your goals, and then celebrate your progress along the way. If your goal today was to clean the kitchen from the ceiling to the floor and you did it, guess what? Celebrate it! It doesn’t matter how small it is. If you have something on your checklist or to-do list that you finished today, celebrate it.

Okay and the next one is, did you know that practicing self-care, taking care of yourself physically and emotionally, can help build resilience and confidence? Yes it does! Do the activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as maybe exercising. Does that make you feel good afterwards?

Or, reading something that makes you feel good, or spending time with loved ones. Those are all considered self-care. Even something as simple as getting out of bed, taking a shower, and if you’re a woman, putting on your makeup as if you’re gonna go meet a friend for lunch, do it. Just do it, you’ll feel so much better getting ready.

And wear your favorite clothes. Get rid of clothes that doesn’t make you feel good. A friend of mine told me that. She said she got rid of all her clothes that does not make her feel good. She donated them or sold them. She has clothes that make her feel empowered and make her feel good and make her feel confident.

And so, I suggest the same thing! I think that will help build confidence when you look in the mirror, you’re showered, your hair is fixed, your makeup is on, you’ve got nice clothes on that make you feel good. That will help build your self-confidence, so add that to your self-care routine.

Do you also need extra support? Well don’t be afraid to reach out to your friends or family, or a professional.

If you need help overcoming self-doubt, talking to others about your experiences can help you feel less alone and provide you with new perspectives and strategies. Sometimes when you talk to your friends, they might have gone through the same thing, and so they can empathize with you and maybe even give you different opinions and suggestions.

Look, I believe that most human beings have experienced self-doubt, but just remember this. You are capable and deserving of success and happiness. By identifying your triggers, challenging negative thoughts, and taking small steps practicing self-care, and talking with your friends for support, or a life coach, you can overcome anything and achieve your goals.
